Hardware: Laser Alignment tool
Tuesday, 11 September 2007
ImageThis is the alignment tool we have developed in order to make laser alignment easy on the MoFlo. We found that it was very difficult to get the laser alignment orthogonal without a complete deconstruction of the optical paths on the MoFlo. This tool remedy's this situation by making the alignment simple and fast. Its body is make from Perspex, and the donuts are made from PVC. Click on the image to download the technical drawing.

Please read the safety instructions and your local rules before attempting this procedure.

With the laser power attenuated to a safe working power, remove the cover from the laser turning tower. Then remove the laser tube enclosure. Plug in the Alignment Tube. Open the shutter.

Use the Bottom laser mirror adjusters to steer the beam through the front pin hole. Then use the top laser mirror adjuster to steer the beam through the back donut's pin hole. Repeat until you see no clipping.

With the laser shutter closed, cover your optical path(s).

Disclaimer:

In using these instructions you agree to take full responsibility for any mishaps, injury, loss of data, bad things etc…

Please read all the relevant health and safety documents before performing any activity.

This connection cable is only suitable for Coherent I90 class lasers that have the communication EPROM enabled. Please consult your manual.

The parts are all very cheap and can be sourced from any electronic shop. This cable differs from the manual in that the DTR-DSR and RTS-CTS pins are shorted on the 9 pin female side. The cable can be any suitable 3 core cable, I have in the past used cat 5 ethernet cable which worked very well, but you do not need use twisted pair cabling except in electrically noisy labs.

You can send commands to the laser using a terminal, such as Hyper Terminal in Windows, and talk to the laser from there. Alternately, you can download my software and use that instead. The I90 Laser Control program as well as relevant information can be downloaded here as a Zip exe.

Key:

RXD = Receive Data
TXD = Transmit Data
RTS = Request To Send
CTS = Clear To Send
DSR = Data Set Ready
GND = Signal Ground
DTR = Data Terminal Ready
